Exhibited at the Tokai University Industry-Academia Collaboration Fair 2017

The Glocal Monitoring Project exhibited at the Tokai University Industry-Academia Collaboration Fair 2017, which was held on September 5 at the Tokai University Takanawa Campus. This fair is held every year to present the results of research conducted at the university that are expected to be put to practical use, and to provide opportunities for industry-university collaboration and technology transfer.

On the day of the exhibition, more than 60 research themes and results were displayed by the individual research units, which are groups organized by institutes and laboratories within the university, including this project. About 150 business people attended the event, and there was a lively exchange of opinions.

This project has attracted a great deal of interest from local governments and companies, and specific cooperative negotiations have since begun.

Research and Information Center receives award from Japan Coast Guard

The Tokai University Research and Information Center (TRIC) received the Japan Coast Guard Director-General Award on September 8.

Since 2003, TRIC, which is led by Director Kohei Cho (Dean, School of Information Science and Technology) and Associate Professor Hideyo Yokotsuka, has been receiving data around the Sea of Okhotsk observed by the MODIS sensor (visible and infrared radiometer sensor) onboard NASA’s Earth observation satellite TERRA/AQUA. The data have been received by antennas installed at the Tokai University Space Information Center (TSIC) in Kumamoto and on the roof of the Techno Cube (Building 19) in the Shonan Campus, which was completed in March of this year. The data are made available on the website after geometric correction and color composite processing. This MODIS image of the Sea of Okhotsk is being used to create preliminary sea ice maps of the Ice Information Center operated by the First Regional Coast Guard Headquarters of the Japan Coast Guard. This award was given in recognition of the project’s longstanding contributions to the JCG’s activities to prevent marine disasters caused by ice floes along the Hokkaido coast in winter.

On September 8, Mr. Satoshi Nakajima, the Director-General of the Japan Coast Guard (JCG), gave us a letter of appreciation at a ceremony held in the JCG Director-General’s Office, Central Government Building No. 3, Kasumigaseki, Tokyo.
